Utilization Data Update:Data Update: Retirement of Reported Utilization and Addition of New Utilization Data SetUtilization Data Update:

Key Changes:

  • New data set: combines historical reported utilization with contemporary tracked utilization where this was possible.
  • Retirement of Reported Utilization: reported utilization will be retired and replaced by the new data set.
  • Preservation of Historical Data: All historical reported utilization will be preserved in the new data set and visible under new column headings.
  • Effective Date: The last date for reported utilization for any aircraft is June 2024. After this date, the data will be blended with tracked data for more timely and enhanced coverage.

Update overview

Cirium has made changes to improve the coverage and accuracy of cumulative aircraft utilization data points, associated calculated statistics, and usage of this data to project aircraft utilization, within the Fleets Analyzer Projection tab.

These improvements were made possible through the creation of a new utilization data set that blends historical reported utilization with contemporary tracked utilization. The two data sets complement each other to provide the industry’s most accurate view of an aircraft’s lifetime utilization.

As part of this change reported utilization has now been retired and replaced by the new data set. Historical reported utilization has been incorporated into the new data set and visible in product under the new column headings (see table at end of article). Where possible, reported and tracked utilization has been blended from the last reported date, this date will vary from on a case-by-case basis. The date at which data is blended can be found in the column ‘Reported Hour & Cycles Date’.

Why is the new data set better than Reported?

Cumulative utilization (an aircraft’s total flight hours and flight cycles over it’s lifetime) currently relies on reported utilization data.

As of Q1 2025, reported utilization covers only ~50% of the in-service commercial fleet, including only 40% of commercial operators. Due to ongoing reporting and acquisition challenges, when available, the data suffers from a three-month lag. This mean for ~50% of the in-service commercial fleet cumulative utilization is not being gathered.

To address this issue, we have combined the historical reported utilization with tracked utilization; which covers 99% of the in-service commercial fleet with a lag of one-day. Following the last reported utilization date for an aircraft, the data is switched to tracked utilization, meaning we can continue adding data to an aircraft’s cumulative utilization without relying on data being reported by the aircraft OEM or operator.

How will the new data set effect the Projections Tab?

With blended utilization, the number of aircraft with up-to-date cumulative utilization will increase by ~40,000 or 147%. The increase will impact utilization projections for many aircraft in Fleets Analyzer, as the projection logic has more data to work with. Expect to see changes, however they represent the improved accuracy and coverage of the data.

When should I use the new data set and when should I use Tracked?

Tacked is still the recommended data set for queries that are not related to an aircraft’s cumulative utilization, as the new data set will only blend reported and tracked data if there is a no gap (that cannot be explained by an aircraft event e.g. storage) between the last reported date and the next tracked date.

For some aircraft there is a gap, in such case the data is not blended as the result would not be a true reflection of the aircraft’s lifetime utilization. Therefore for to view annual, last 12 month, monthly, period utilization data tracked utilization still provides the industry’s more accurate and complete data.

Will any other products be effected?

In addition to Fleets Analyzer, reported utilization will be replaced by the new data set in Values Analyzer, Profiles and Asset Watch.
